Military Retirement vs. VA A&A

    First of all, you guys have a great site with lots of helpful information.

    I found a similar question to mine posted previously but the reply was made by private email, so I can't see what it was.

    My dad meets all qualifications (as far as I can tell) for A&A. My question is 'will awarding of A&A affect the amount he is now getting from military retirement?' He get about $4,000 per month from military retirement (20 years Navy) and social security, but it's not enough to cover the cost of 24/7 in home assistance. But, if getting approved for A&A will lower the benefit he gets from military retirement, I don't see the benefit of applying for it. Any help is greatly appreciated!

    John,

    His retirement is not an issue as long as this is a true "retirement" and not "compensation" he receives for service-connected disabilities.
