I've just started this process and I am confused! I just read that there has been a change (Oct. 2012) in what will be considered as nonreimbursed medical expenses in an assisted living. Now, for room and board to qualify, the widow must meet at least two of the five daily living needs: bathing, dressing, eating, transfer, toileting. My question is if you are legally blind do you still have to meet this criteria? We are currently paying for someone to help with bathing and dressing but had planned to stop at the end of the month due to dwindling finances. Will we have to continue in order to meet the requirement and be able to count room and board as part of her medical expense?

This primarily applies to those who are in "Independent" facilities.

If you Mom is in an "assisted living" facility, you should be ok.
