Forgot to mention - two weeks prior to receiving the generic letter (as I discuss below this post), I got a letter saying that there would likely be a change in the award/benefit amount that I would get each month. It goes on to say that I'd be notified of any change 'in the near future'.

So - perhaps the 'notification' they're referring to is actually this generic letter (again - below) that tells me they're deciding what to do with me?

    Please help!

The COLA letter is letting you know that you will see a 3.6% increase in pension award. For the past 2 years veterans and surviving spouses have seen no costs of living increase. As of Dec 1st of 2011, the 3.6% went into effect.

When should this be paid out, my father did not see it in his Jan. 2012 check.

It should have been on the Jan check, so I suggest you contact the VA and inquire why he did not see the increase.
