A frog or a horse?

My husband is 78 and recently had spinal fusion surgery and is a nursing home. He is also experiencing bouts of dementia. They are considering long term but right now the status is catch and release. Medicare is paying for the first 20 days.  Should I use this in-nursing-home status as an opportunity to apply for benefits or are they looking for something definitely permanent?

He cannot rise to his feet from a sitting position, or sit down without experiencing major pain. He can bend to pull up his pants or tie his shoes.  He wears a buzzer that sounds whenever he moves a great deal, which summons help.

Could this possible improvable situation be a good time to apply, or not?

Sandy,

What is the prognosis?  Are they expecting him to at some point to return home and be able to take care of himself?  Our suggestion is that if he is going to require assistance either in-home or in a facility from this point forward, then you should make application based off of his physical needs.

It has been suggested that he could get well enough to return to home living.  He has so far to go! My days are ridiculously hectic but I will try to get the stuff they want to the VA.  I suppose I shoud take a nursing home admittance report with me.
