Thanks to your website my mother was able to receive her A&A pension for the past year and a half. Sadly, she passed away last week. Can she keep the April 1 payment or will that have to be returned to the VA?
    Thank you.

We are so sorry to hear of your loss, and offer our condolences to you and your family.

I am honored that my work did make a difference for your Mom.

The April payment will have to be returned, so don't spend it. Notify the VA of her passing, and it will probably take a couple of phone calls and a couple of months to get it straight and returned.

Doesn't the VA pay benefits a month behind? If that's true, then the payment received April 1 would be the March benefit and she should be eligible for at least part of that since she lived part of the month???

The VA does not pro-rate, and yes, they stay behind, because if you file in Mar, and are approved, it goes to the 1st of April. Mar is not covered even though you filed in Mar, the effective date would be April 1. It always creates a gap.
