My brother has received the A and A pension for about five years and has been in assisted living facilities. At age 87, He is beginning to wane and will perhaps need to move to a nursing home. Should that happen, will he lose his A ands A pension? If so, is Medicaid his last resort? He has nearly no assets. Will appreciate information. Tom BAY

For most going into NH care, the expense is so high that filing for Medicaid becomes necessary. Very few can afford to private pay NH care, and even with the max award of A&A, it leaves a huge amount to pay.

If he goes on Medicaid, his pension will be reduced to $90.00. This money cannot be spent on his care. It has to be used for personal items.
