My 91 year old Mom is a surviving spouse who is housebound. We don't have the up front cash for Assisted Living until an award is made, and she wants to stay at home anyway. She has no assets or savings (having spent it all down on Medical & living costs) and her only income is her monthly Social Security. We are in the process of applying for the VA A&A pension now - gathering docs and doing the forms, etc.

She has three major medical expenses: 1) home health aides who come in to care for her each week, 2) monthly Medicare supplement costs, and 3) unreimbursed copays & prescription costs. We tried to read through on the VA site how the they calculate what her monthly benefit would be, but don't understand their examples. Does someone have a simpler explanation of how to calculate expected monthly housebound benefit for a surviving spouse with only Social Security for income??

    Thanks

Please see the link here on the forums under Tips and Resources for "Countable Income" to help you arrive at what the VA would arrive at that figure.
