Finding records to "prove" my Dad served during active duty has been a nightmare. After multiple contacts with the NPRC, National Archives, National Mritime Service and Army Personnel Records, I finally found "something." Because my Dad was in the Army Transport Service (branch of Merchant Marines), they have copies of his ship assignments, embarkment, etc. They sent me copies and I in turn submitted with a "Statement in Support of Claim."  His application was denied due to lack of evidence that he served during active wartime. Will these records be enough or do I need more...?  The Army Records person did say they would process request for DD=214, but could take 2 months...

I saw this statement on a response here:

The VA is required to assist in obtaining verification from the National Personnel Records Center and/or the military service departments. THEY HAVE NOT OFFERED ANY HELP.

Hello,

My two uncles were also Merchant Marine during WWII. I got their DD214s from the US Coast Gurad
http://www.uscg.mil/nmc/wwiimm.asp

For some reason they both had mistakes, wrong SSN etc. So I had to get corrections otherwise known as DD215s too.

I faxed the requests and asked for a quick reply. It still took a few months.
