Hello. My dad is 72, living with my brother and family, and we're needing to put him in an ALF. He has no assets and receives 1300/mo in SS. He's depressed, diabetic, has bowel issues, and difficulty walking. My brother met with a VA rep today and was told dad doesn't qualify medically or physically. All of the reading I have done states just the opposite. Am I right? Is the VA yanking our chain? We're confused. Huh

Based on the inital information you have provided, the VA has sadly mis-informed you, which is usually the case.

When are you looking at putting him into the ALF?  The monthly expenses of that will bring his monthly income down more than likely to a negative, which would qualify him financially.

a va rep is not a Rating Specialist either. they are the ones who make the pension/a&a medical determinations.

i can see if the case is that the vet is in great health and is moving in to an independent part of the assisted living facility.....
