I posted in another topic (I think  Huh) so I apologize if I've broken a rule.... I don't have much experience on forums.

I just moved my 80 year old father into an assisted living facility in Arkansas and I live in Texas. The facility told me about the A&A pension which I didn't know about previously. They had a flyer from an attorney who says he specializes in elder law and who could handle filing the paperwork for the A&A. I called him and he seemed like he knew what he was talking about but when he told me it would be $1750 upfront for his services I got a little scared about spending that much money without knowing for sure my dad would receive the benefit. Does anyone have experience using an attorney and does it help the VA to process the applications more easily or is there any benefit to using an attorney other than not having to do it all yourself?

Also, I read somewhere that I have to file the application in his home state, Arkansas, and that I can't call in and check on anything about the claim if I am calling from another state? Is that right? It seems so stupid to me. Any information would be a great help as I'm trying to decide whether to do it myself or hire the attorney.

Thanks so much for this site! It's a real help and I know I can find great information here in the future.

No.

It is actually not that difficult to complete an application.

Read the instructions carefully.
