My 88year old mother has been living with me and my husband for the last two years.  She has various medical issues plus beginning stages of Alz and dementia.  Though a retired gov employee, her finances will be strained soon as the cost for her medical care increases.

My dad, WWII vet, left my mom several years after returning from the war.   From my understanding, they found him dead many years later on the streets of NY.  Supposedly, she divorced him prior that time but wasn't sure if the divorce actually went thru.  If there indeed was a divorce and my mom did not remarry, are there any benefits she can qualify for?

I am at lost where to begin to do anything~~~~  All I know is my family's funds are running short and any help I can find financially or in services for my mom would be appreciated.

SD,

You will need to some how determine if they were indeed legally divorced.  You can't proceed in any direction until you are able to clarify this.

If in the event you discover that the divorce was indeed granted, then your mom would not be entitled to this pension as the surviving spouse, which I know is not what you are hoping for.

If the divorce was not granted, then you can explore her elegibility to this pension.

definitly check into the court system in the state/county she was living in at the time she filed for divorce.  i would think that she would have gotten a court date and/or documents indicating a divorce was granted. but if she doesnt recall what happened, just look into it. i am sure the court will have a record of all this. good luck.
