Hi,
I moved my Dad into assisted living in Dec.  The assisted living facility told me they had lawyers that would help me in filing the forms for the Veteran Aid and Assistance.  I went to that lawyer, and gave them all the information they asked for and let them file.  My first mistake was not looking over the forms before they filed.  (my Dad was in the hospital Jan – Feb, which is part of the reason I didn’t look over the forms, just wanted them sent).

My Dad is divorced, and in the divorce agreement he gives my mother his entire pension ($350 a month), he also gives her his SS check which is aprox. $2100 a month.  He has no money in the bank, and no assets.  My mother pays for his secondary insurance, and his medications.   She also pays for his dentists, and medications since he doesn’t have any money of his own.  The only listed expenses that the attorney put on the medical expense is 96.40 for medicare part B, 2,125 for the assisted living facility, and 28.22 for prescriptions from Rite Aid.

My mother pays for AARP secondary insurance, which cost 270 a month, his prescriptions cost in excess of 175 a month he will soon be in the medicare part D hole, he needs to drink 3 boosts a day which cost 90 a month, and his depends are at least 45 a month.  She also pay's out of pocket for dental work.  I brought the attorney the bills from the different things, but it was her determination that my dad didn’t pay any of this since he gives his checks over to my mother.  I am actually taking my father to a new VA hospital on Tues (March 10), which is why I asked her to send me the medical expense portion since I want to start to get some medications from the VA.  My Dad since his last hospitalization is on 13 different medications a day.

I just received a letter stating that they have given my Dad a file number, but because of the heavy volume of persons registering it will be a while before we are notified.

In the meantime, my Dad is in a semi-private accommodation right now, I plan on moving him to a private room shortly (it’s not working out at all).  So I will have to notify the VA of the difference in cost.

What should I do about the medical expenses listed?  Shouldn’t they be made aware of the true expenses my Dad has?

Any advice you can give me will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance for any help,
ilene

Due to the complexity of this situation, reply was sent privately so not to confuse those this would not apply to.
