Death while receiving A and A benefits

I understand the a and a benefit will be sent back for the month that my Dad died while receiving the benefit. But I had to give the Assisted Living facility 30 day notice. He died Aug. 30,2008. I gave a 30 day notice, had to pay 2,331.00 out of my pocket for the month of Sept. All social security benefits and va benefits stopped, my question is can I get at least the va benefit back to help defray the cost out of my pocket??
