I was told that aid and attendance is a renewable benefit and that the veteran must show compliance?  How is this done and is it something that has to be renewed on an annual basis?

Aid and Attendance can go on indefinitely, as long as the veteran or spouse continues to qualify. The individual must fill out a yearly EVR (Eligibility Verification Review) listing his/her income and expenses for the previous year. So long as he/ she continues to meet the VA criteria, they will continue to receive the benefit. And, in fact, if their expenses increase and they are not already receiving the maximum benefit, they may receive a lump sum reimbursement for non-recurring unreimbursed expenses incurred during the previous year.
