Hi:

A couple of questions regarding the confusing EVR...

1)  The unreimbursed medical expenses were preprinted on the form - $54406...I'm coming up with about $9000 less than that.  If I enter a smaller amount than the preprinted amount, will that affect my mother's A&A benefit?  She currently receives the max for surviving spouse.  Her expenses greatly outweigh her income.

2)  Should I complete form 21-8416?

3)  She is in an Assisted Living Facility.  How do I answer the Box 4A?  She isn't in a nursing home, but...

Thanks for any help you can provide.  This has been a great benefit for my mother and I don't want to do anything to mess it up!

Thanks!

Kathy -

I'm in the same situation with my mom. I think the difference was about $8,000 on my mom's EVR.  Her A&A was increased mid-year, and she didn't live in the ALF the full year, so the pre-printed form shows what her expenses would have been if she had lived there the full year.  My mom's medical expenses also far outweigh her income. Like you, I'm concerned about it since I've heard so many scarey stories. However, if her countable medical expenses are exceeding her income, you should be OK.

I completed 21-8416 because of the large difference.

I answered no to the nursing home question since it's a different type of care.

I hope this helps.

Ladies;

I don't know the definitive answer, but I can tell you what I was instructed to do and it's worked everytime on my EVR's.

Answer yes in 4A ,write "Assisted Living Facility" in the blank area of the box, and fill out the rest of the 4's.

The VA has not questioned my answers.

To show you how well orgainzed the VA is - I have been helping veterans for 10 years and I never say they are in a nursing home when they are in assisted living.
